CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN JUSTICE AND REALITY

Some of the most important conversations happen away from stages, microphones, and social media feeds. They happen around kitchen tables, in living rooms, over coffee, and among people willing to speak honestly about the choices they have made.

Conversations Between Justice and Reality are gatherings where people come together to explore a question many of us carry every day:

How do we live faithfully between the world as it is and the world as it could be?

In these conversations, participants share their own stories of navigating the tension between justice and reality—how they balance competing obligations, what they have sacrificed, what they have protected, where they have compromised, what they have learned, and how they continue moving forward.

These gatherings are not debates. They are not lectures. They are opportunities for reflection, listening, and genuine exchange across different experiences and perspectives.

They are for anyone who has ever felt pulled between conviction and circumstance, ideals and responsibilities, hope and limitation—and had to decide how to live within that tension.

WHY THESE CONVERSATIONS EXIST

One of the central hopes of the Between Justice and Reality project is that it sparks conversations that do not depend on the author being present to continue. The goal is not simply to share ideas, but to create spaces where people can wrestle together with the questions that shape a meaningful life.

The tension between justice and reality is not an abstract philosophical problem. It appears in careers, families, friendships, institutions, communities, and public life. It appears whenever we must choose between competing obligations, limited options, and imperfect outcomes.

These gatherings provide a place to examine those experiences honestly and together.

THE FIRST CONVERSATIONS

The first Conversations Between Justice and Reality will take place in three settings that have long shaped public life and personal meaning:

  • A university

  • A house of worship

  • A community member’s home

Each setting offers a different lens through which to examine the questions at the heart of this project and to learn from one another’s experiences.

HOST A CONVERSATION

One of the hopes for this project is that these discussions continue long after the formal gathering ends—that they become conversations people carry back to their families, workplaces, congregations, classrooms, and communities.

If you are interested in hosting or sponsoring a Conversation Between Justice and Reality, we would love to hear from you. Whether in a home, community space, congregation, campus, or organization, we welcome invitations to help create spaces where these discussions can take root.

Additional details and the conversation framework will be released soon.
